On November 11 and 12, the Catholic Student Association at Rutgers and Saint Paul’s Outreach came together to put on the Fall Formation Retreat at Saint Paul Inside the Walls in Madison, NJ. The retreat’s theme was “The True Cost of Discipleship.”

Fr. Paul Helfrich, one of the founding members of the Brotherhood of Hope, has received a special commission from His Holiness Pope Francis to serve as a Missionary of Mercy during the Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy.

This summer the Brotherhood of Hope traveled to the Holy Land for a life-changing pilgrimage. We are so grateful to those whose generosity enabled us to deepen our friendship with Jesus Our All-Sufficiency as a band of brothers.

Our Boston house has changed locations from Somerville to Mission Hill after two years of preparation and renovation. On Sunday, June 28th, we were grateful to welcome Cardinal Sean O'Malley to celebrate Mass and bless our newly refurbished home on the corner of Parker Street and Hillside.

Each year on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that led to the legalization of abortion in the U.S. the Brotherhood of Hope gathers students from each of our campuses to participate in the March for Life. Monica Fernandez del Castillo, Northeastern University freshman, offered these thoughts on her experience at this year's March.

With the community gathered for our annual retreat in Methuen, Massachusetts on July 25th, our newest brothers committed their lives to Christ as novices in the Brotherhood of Hope. Brs. Ray and Logan declared their intent before the assembled brothers, with several associates and college men also attending.

On July 5, 2014 Brother Parker, a man who could have gone to Med school (aced his MCATs), a man known by all as gifted, faithful, and most notably, full of joy, offered all of his life for the rest of his life to Jesus Christ, our beloved Master and Most Dear Friend.

For two weeks in May, Brs. Patrick Reilly and Adam Neri led a group of six men on a missionary expedition to Calcutta, India. Their destination was the motherhouse of the Missionaries of Charity to participate in the work begun by their famous foundress Bl. Mother Teresa.

Nearly ten Brothers and over 100 college students from the campuses of FSU, NU and RU travelled to Washington, DC and marched in defense of life. It was a prayerful pilgrimage to cry out in prayer on behalf of those without a voice, the unborn. Everyone who participated was deeply touched by the size of the response. Many students had no idea that this fight for life was so strongly supported by so many thousands of people. May their witness and prayers make a difference to turn the tide towards a Culture of Life!

. at the School of the New Evangelization (SNE). SNE is a ten day school for college students to be trained and equipped for evangelization on campus. What an impressive response these students made to the call to "Go forth and make disciples of all nations" (Mt. 28:19)!

For our annual Summer Conference, the Brotherhood had the privilege of having Bruce Yocum, founding member of the Servants of the Word
. as our retreat master. The Brotherhood's friendship with the Servants was yet again renewed as we called to mind the faithfulness of the founding members of their community. We also celebrated the 25th anniversary of our own Brothers, Joseph Donovan and Ken Apuzzo!

For the 12th year in a row, Br. Ken Appuzo and Br. Patrick Reily brought 12 students from the Rutgers Catholic Student Association to serve and meet the people of Tanzania. Over the past decade of visiting and serving in Tanzania, God has done amazing things both in the hearts of those whom we have worked with and with the students we bring. This year was no exception! What a beautiful thing to watch how God has brought about a real friendship with a people who speak a different language, have a completely different culture and live over 8000 miles away.
