Worship In Its Central Place [Advent Week 1 Reflection]
December4,2019
by Br. Ray Morris
This is the first of the two-minute drills for Advent. The theme we'll be going over these two-minutes drills is the theme of going into the desert. Since the very early days of our Brotherhood, this has been important to us. Why is this the case? Well because when God led His people out of Egypt into the desert, He had a purpose. And His purpose was to fashion them into a holy people, fit for a Holy Land. And the same is true for us. God wishes to fashion and purify us so that we can receive fully His gift, mainly is this Advent season, the gift of His Son Jesus Christ.
Each week we’ll be touching on one of these spiritual themes to prepare ourselves for Christmas and today we’ll focus on worship.
Worship is the main reason that God led His people out of Egypt into the desert. “Let my people go that they may worship me.” We see this too when the first thing that the people do is go to Mount Sinai, where God reveals Himself in thunder, smoke and clouds, and the people fall down and worship. Unfortunately, the first great sin of Israel was when Aaron set up a golden calf and people turned to false worship. Lucky for them and for us our God is merciful and He forgave them. So we see that worship was central to the Israelites in the desert and their entire lives, and so too with us. But does it show in the way that we live our lives?
The question for us this Advent season is how can I put worship in its rightful place?
A suggestion for us could be reading the daily Mass readings before Mass, perhaps reflecting on them as a family. Another idea is to go to Mass early to prepare our hearts and minds to receive the Lord. In all that we do, may we continue to put worship at its center place so we may offer God fitting praise and right worship.
