The greatest blessing of my life is the marriage to my wife Ann for almost 35 years. One of the great benefits of marrying into the “Bunsa Clan” is her sibling Br. Rahl Bunsa. Several years after we were married, Br. Rahl contacted us when we lived in Virginia, asking if we could house Brothers and novices as they traveled from New Jersey to Florida to rest and enjoy a hot meal.
We loved these visits. For me they were the beginning of my reversion back to the Catholic Church. At first, I dreaded when Br. Stephen would ask, “how’s your faith life?” I never had the right words to answer the question, but Br. Stephen sensed my reluctance and lack of knowledge. In turn, he would send me recordings from Brotherhood of Hope conferences, and I began to seek and ask questions on my own!
Over the years, Ann and I grew to love Christ and embrace our Catholic faith with great love and fervor. It is the center of our marriage and family life. The Brothers were such a critical part of our growth. Their gentleness, encouragement, prayers, plus their ability to meet us “where we’re at” helped us understand what it means to have a personal relationship with our Lord.
Ann and I often describe the Brothers as Christ’s soldiers on the battlefield as they serve on several college campuses. The Brothers encounter incredible challenges in reaching college students who have experienced a trend of indoctrination that has led many of them away from their faith life.
We support the Brotherhood of Hope financially and with prayers as a way of saying thank you to them for “standing in the gap” to help these students. The Brothers are filled with the Holy Spirit and it shines through their faithfulness to the Christian virtues of faith, hope, and love. It is what they do best!
